Drone Versus Spider Mite

Drone Versus Spider Mite Drone Versus Spider Mite Drone Versus Spider MiteWhen a consumer bites into a strawberry, they rarely consider the lengthy product chain that brought the berry to their mouths. And those same consumers would probably be even less likely to ponder an insect known as the spider mite. However, rest assured that many strawberry growers are thinking about this insect a great deal. For as fate would have it, the spider mite is the strawberrys most dangerous enemy.April Van Hise, a klasseuate student pursuing a masters degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California, Davis, is part of a team out to rescue strawberry growers from the spider mite, using drone technology. Looking to capitalize on this mobile and versatile technology, they created Bugbot, a drone that carries a container with a paddle-wheel at its center, with the idea of dispensing large numbers of predator mites, which will in turn kill the spider mites. The dispenser, ar med with an opening two to three inches in diameter, utilizes the rotating wheel to dispense the predator mites, but when factors such as wind, height, and speed are taken into account, a smooth distribution is not as easy as it sounds. Were trying to work with the effects both from the rotors on the ground and the wind and how it disperses on the ground, she says. A new idea we have is coming up with a corkscrew paddle that will push the mites out the back of the drone instead of dumping them, instead of pushing them continuously. The paddle has eight divisions so, as it turns, it dumps a little bit at a time.Theyre currently using the granular mineral vermiculite for their practice dumps before they switch to actual predator mites.Part of what weve varied is how high the drone is and the speed of the drone, she says. The plan is ultimately to use machine learning with data. Weve been using nine feet because at fifteen feet, the drone went outside of the sampling area. The speeds ha ve been varied from 2.5 to five miles per hour. The drone has a DGI S1000 frame and its all DGI equipment, she says, and then they added the Bugbot name. Eventually, an onboard SDK software kit will be used and they will adapt it to the Bugbot to control the drone autonomously. They will also write the program for the robot operating system in order to control the drone.Another grad student is working on a differential GPS. The GPS we have right now is a few years old and its important to hit a certain crop or row, she says. A few meters could make the difference. A differential GPS could get it down to centimeters in accuracy.Originally, the Bugbot had a stepper motor, but there were concerns about it stalling or not having enough torque, she explains. A 360 servo motor is in place now. The Bugbot is all 3D printed parts so maybe the paddle and the shaft of the motor didnt quite go together as perfectly as it should have, she says. In addition, there is an Arduino on board as the mi crocontroller and its controlled with a radio controller.University of California, Davis postdoc Elvira de Lange, who has a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Neuchtel and received a grant for this drone project, says that stopping the spider mite is particularly relevant for the state of California because it produces the majority of strawberries for the U.S. To have a background like mine and to have a chance to work with those with a mechanical engineering background, you learn a great deal and hopefully we can provide the kind of help behauptung hard-working farmers deserve.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Hopefully we can provide the kind of help these hard-working farmers deserve. Elvira de Lange, University of California

Jobscan Why It Works

Jobscan Why It Works Jobscan Why It Works Richard Poulin, resume expert, weighs in on JobscanThis is a behind-the-scenes article. It reveals how Jobscan was created, from the very mouth of its founders James Hu and Michael Lee.You see, just like them, I run a small business in the job search space. And when I discovered Jobscan, I thought it was a great tool that is, if it did work as advertised.Copy this, paste that, clickety-click, poof Heres a few tips to get interviews. Yeah, I was skeptical.James and I eventually got in touch, when I was researching the topic of applicant tracking systems (ATS). And after getting to know him, I started digging a bit. (You cant just ask straight out if someones full of baloney after 5 minutes, right? Not a good first-date move.) And he actually had real answers. My reaction was Why isnt this on your website?I told James that Jobscan needed to let its audience know how it was built, but especially how they tested it, to make koranvers it worked. An d since I enjoyed the topic, I figured I could interview the two founders and write this article, if they allowed me to plug my business. So, check out Resume Hacking if you need help with resume accomplishments. (Hows that for transparency?)During that discussion, I learned a lot about the story of James and Michael, and how Jobscan came about. This will have to wait for aleidher article, whichshould be published right here in a few days. This article is really about demonstrating how/why Jobscan works. The idea dealing with resume keyaber jasJames created the original, nameless tool when he was looking for a job himself, and wanted to automate his own keyword-tailoring process. He felt he was wasting too much time, so he created what would become Jobscan. At first, it was only for his personal use. However, the tool served him so well that he told his friends, who told theirs, and Jobscan was born. The idea behind Jobscan was simple paste your resume, paste the job ad, and Jobscan loo ks for similarities and differences. And it tells you what you need to change to optimize your application. This is Jobscans process. Simple, right? And thats where you might be skeptical, as I was. Is it really that simple? Can a relatively basic keyword analysis tool help you jump over such a major hurdle (the automated resume screening)? What convinced me was the testing that James and Michaelperformed on applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software that does the resume screening. One of their main problems was that they needed to study many ATS (of which there are hundreds). And ATS are full-fledged, business-grade systems. The type of software that is implemented, not simply installed. In other words, they werent comparing movie editors for a vacation video. They did look for an ATS for Jobscan (to use for their own Human Resources needs), so that provided them with a first access to some ATS. But they went further. How do you test many applicant tracking systems?James and Michael tapped into their network to find HR advisors whod let them test out their tool. These people were using ATS every day, as part of their jobs. So after five oclock, theyd bring chocolate and run a couple of tests. The goal was to analyze how software understood a resume. The software, in this case, was a resume parser, an important piece of the applicant tracking system. The resume parser scans your resume, looking for chosen keywords. It can also extract your name and contact info, diplomas, companies youve worked for, and so on.Heres what they did. They made slight variations of a couple of resumes, which they fed to each ATS, analyzing the results at the other end. Add an s here and there. Remove the hyphen. Add Master of geschftliches miteinander Administration, and search for MBA. Change the format. Stuff like that. What did the machine understand? And, more importantly, when was it confused? If youve been hanging around here at Jobscan for a while, you already know about all the se rules you have to follow, to make sure your resume is easy to digest by the applicant tracking system. Well, for the testing phase, they were systematically breaking these rules, one at a time, monitoring results.ATS just arent that smartThey ran all sorts of tests, which, in a very non-dramatic way, confirmed what most articles were saying ATS dont work that well. So you better have good keywords. And this wasnt a single test at one company, on some system that hadnt been updated since Windows XP. These were serious tests that covered a decent amount of the top 10 ATS out there. In other words, they tested systems that are very prominent right now in the job search space, which often screen out resumes for bogus reasons.James and Michaelsoon realized the issues were fairly obvious. In other words, flaws werent buried deeply they would surface regularly. Youve been a program manager for 5 years? Youre out of luck if the recruiter is searching for program management unless the recr uiter also searches for program manager. There were a few instances where their testing didnt trigger rejection, contrary to what was expected. For example, using tables (which is great for visual organization) or presenting information in the header/footer was not a problem for most ATS.But generally speaking, ATS proved to be very temperamental gatekeepers. And Jobscan was adapted to address that issue, in light of the testing performed by its founders. And it works.Ive asked James for a few examples of user feedback. In what used to take me hours- to handcraft my standard resume to fit a job description- I can get the meat of it to match 80 to 90% in about 10 minutes. Quite a timesaver, said user Sam who is searching for technical project manager jobs.Another usertestimonial comes from George, a materie planner with an MBA, who credits using Jobscan with a bump in interview requests, In the first two days after adjusting my resume from Jobscan and placing it on LinkedIn, I received emails from three recruiters and had one interview.ATS are useful (if you work in HR)Generally speaking, the recruiters theyve discussed with were not very fond of ATS. (Thats also been my experience.) But in the world of LinkedIn and smartphones, HR pros need a tool to handle the massive amount of candidates, however imperfect that tool may be. And its not just about screening resumes. ATS also help with communication, maintaining the candidate database and so on.Another useful thing about ATS, from the employers perspective, is that the system can help to demonstrate befolgung with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) laws. Were fair because we use computers to screen out resumes. In other words, these systems are helpful, despite their flaws. And theyre not going anywhere. Ed Struzik, an International Business Machines Corp. expert on the systems, puts the proportion of large companies using them in the high 90% range, and says it would be very rare to find a Fortune 500 company without one. (Update New research shows that 98% of Fortune 500 use ATS.)If you want to see this in a positive light, you could accept that ATS companies arent too focused on making resume scanning smarter. And then, use that knowledge to your advantage by giving keywords extra attention.Humans will look beyond the keywordsATS will certainly get more sophisticatedover the years. But that heavily depends on developments in artificial intelligence and natural language processing, which are currently not smart enough to make the deep analysis required to really understand your resume. In the future, maybe a resume that talks about financial reporting and audit will be associated to an accountant. But for now, the word accountant better show upThat being said, humans are still making the final decision. Youll need accomplishments and measurable results to show how you stand out as a candidate and get the interview. But to get your resume in front of human eyes, you must get thro ugh the first selection hoop, where keywords are critical. And you can tailor keywords on your own, of course, or use Jobscan to accelerate the process.About RichardRichard Poulin is a resume writer and marketing professional with 12 years of experience. He spent most of his career as a proposal manager with PwC, the largest consulting firm in the world. Lessons Learned From My 10 Step Jobs ProgramLessons Learned From My 10 Step Jobs ProgramLessons Learned From My 10 Step Jobs ProgramBy Kathryn Troutman, Federal Career CoachI recently taught my Ten Steps to a Federal Job studienplan at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Here are the top lessons learned from that classPart 1 Ten Steps to a Federal JobI introduced the Tough Love concept about using the USAJOBS Builder in this class. I have looked at thousands of resumes for federal jobs and I have just lost my patience with the functional format, long bullet lists and big, huge blocks of text. I am telling everyone who is sincerely interested in a federal job, to fill out the USAJOBS builder. No arguments.A favorite activity in the resume writing class is writing a short list of your hats you wear at work. A transitioning military member wrote his hats as Operations Manager, Supervisor, Logistics Manager, and Researcher. I added two more hats Database Manager and Customer Services. This list will become the future outline format resume that will be easy for HR to understand and will match a job announcement. He is ready to write his federal resume today for possible new career opportunities in the government in Oahu.Part 2 The Stars Are Lined Up For Military SpousesThis section was truly fascinating. I explained the interesting special hiring program for military spouses who are listed on their spouses PCS orders. This magic PCS order page can allow a spouse to get listed in a DOD job database that can result in getting hired above veterans and most others. The only jobseekers who can beat a spouse will be the priority placement program DOD employees who lost their jobs because of RIF. Getting into the database is challenging for several reasons Its hard to get the appointment with the HRO person to get registered on the database. Its hard to get a great score on the resume so that you can get great matches for DOD positions near your spouses base. But the Program S is intriguing and worth the complications.GREAT STORYA military spouse in the class volunteered her Program S Registration and story. Her registration reviewed her resume for 1720 job series and one option code of OAA, which is Office Automation. So, the scope of her resume score was very narrow. The total possible job series for a resume could be 5. The total possible Option Codes is 10. So, this young lady was taking advantage of less than 10% of the possible matches for her resume. She knows now that she can rewrite the resume, strengthen it, and go back to HRO and get a new and better score. This is a GREAT contribution to the class Ten Steps to a Federal Job Certification Program Join us in 2016This year, our program is better than ever, with new updated curriculum for a standardized approach to teaching federal job search information.In-Person DatesMarch 15 17, 2016 (Tues Thurs) Loyola College Graduate Center, Columbia, MDMay 24 26, 2016 (Tues Thurs) Fort Drum, NYJuly 26 28, 2016 (Tues Thurs) University of California, San Diego, CA Sep 13 15, 2016 (Tues Thurs) Loyola College Graduate Center, Columbia, MDWebinar DatesYou can also earn your certification by webinar.Next webinar series starts February 18Also upcoming dates starting the weeks of May 3 and August 9.Register nowMore information and registration

Asking the Right Questions to Make the Sale

Asking the Right Questions to Make the SaleAsking the Right Questions to Make the SaleIf you spend your sales appointments giving a lecture about your product and how great it is, you are using a presentation style that will cost you a lot of sales. A much mora effective approach is to ask questions that draw your prospect out. When you ask the right questions in the right way, you can end up getting your prospects to do all the selling for you. At the very least, youll learn a lot about what the prospect wants from your product, which means you can laser-focus your presentation on just those points that will sell most effectively. Asking Open-Ended Questions Asking your prospect a series of open-ended questions during your presentation serves three important purposes. First, it helps you to confirm whether or not the prospect is a good fit for your product. Second, it helps you to identify their hot-button benefits, which allows you to fine-tune your pitch. Third, by getting pro spects to talk about various benefits and what they think about them, you sneak the information past the prospects salesperson filter. Not every question listed here is a perfect fit for every prospect, but these examples will give you a good place to start. Ideally, once you ask a few questions, the prospect will launch into an in-depthspeech and you wont need to do any more prompting at all. Buying History By learning more about the prospects previous buying experiences, youll get a glimpse of how that persons mind works and what their buying routines are. A prospects buying history has a major impact on their opinion of salespeople and what they value most in a product. What experiences, good or bad, have you had with this product type (e.g., What experiences, good or bad, have you had with buying cars?)?When did you last buy a product type? What process have you used in the past to buy a product type?Has that process worked well for you? Why or why not? What have you already tr ied doing to fix the problem with your current product type? What have you purchased from us before? How did that purchase go? Purchase-Specific Questions unterstellung questions relate to the specific transaction you are hoping to initiate. Purchase questions help you identify hot-button needs and to design your pitch around them. What prompted you to meet with me today? What qualities do you look for in a product type?Which quality is most important to you?Why would you like to have a product type? What is your timeline for buying a product type? What is your budget?Who else is involved in the purchasing decision? Rapport-Building Questions These questions get your prospects talking about themselves and help you develop a relationship of trust. They can also help you identify the prospects likes and dislikes, which is valuable information. How long have you been with the company? (for B2B sales)Where did you buy that beautiful sofa? (B2C)How old are your children? How many do y ou have? (If you see a photo)What would you like this product type to do for you? Clarifying Questions If a prospect gives only a brief response to an important question, try drawing out more information. Tell me more about that. Can you give me an example? Can you be more specific? How did that affect you? Objection-Seeking Questions Until your prospect voices his objections, you cant do anything about them. If a prospect hasnt raised any objections then a little questioning can draw them out. What are your thoughts so far?Do you have any concerns? What are they? What other subjects should we discuss? Is there any reason we shouldnt move forward?
